How to protect yourself from door to door fraud
Watch out for these - Rogue Traders: Offering "immediate" repairs (roofing, paving) that are either never completed or done to a poor standard at inflated prices. Courier Fraud: Criminals call pretending to be from a bank or the police, claiming your account is compromised. They then send a "courier" to your home to collect your bank card, PIN, or cash. Bogus Sellers: Individuals claiming to be "ex-offenders" on a rehabilitation scheme selling overpriced household goods. They may become aggressive if you refuse to buy. Utility Impersonators: Scammers posing as meter readers or water board officials to gain access to your property for "distraction burglary".
How to Protect Yourself - Check ID: Always ask for an identity card and verify it by calling the company using a number you found independently. Don't Let Them In: Genuine callers will not mind waiting outside while you verify their details. Use Security Measures: Fit a door chain and use it. You can also display a "No Cold Calling" sticker. (Please message if you would message if you need one of these providing and a local officer can help).
How to Report Fraud - Emergency (Crime in progress): Call 999 immediately. Non-Emergency (Suspicious caller): Call 101 or report it via Cheshire Police Website. National Reporting: Contact Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040
