Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Now lock down restrictions are lifting and you can get out more with your horses it’s the perfect time to check over your trailers and horse boxes as most will not have moved for a while.

Check you have a current MOT and an up to date plating certificate on horseboxes over 3.5T. It’s recommended to have your trailer serviced once a year.

You should always do your checks before loading and travelling anyway but having a more detailed check every so often could save you and your horse.

Check tyres (no bulges, stones, cuts, tread depth and pressure)

The body of the trailer or horsebox (damage on outside and inside, seals, all partitions, pins, ring fixings).

 Electrics / lights

Floor and ramp

Jockey Wheel, Hitch, brakes – Its surprising how many don’t attach the breakaway cable, this is a legal requirement and a very important piece of safety equipment.

Don’t forget to check the towing vehicle.

Know your weights and check you hold the correct driving licence.

Always refer to your hand book or check online for further details, many websites have a wide range of information available.

Stay safe
Thank you
