Phone call scams and other fraudsters

Alert message sent 23/10/2021 12:25:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Good afternoon all.
As I am sure you are aware I only try to send out messages that are important for us all to be aware of and keep reminding others of. The more you can discuss these issues with friends and relatives the less the risk of persons being caught out. Unfortunately criminals are always trying to stay ahead of those who try and catch them out hence this message.

Phone call scams
Within the last few days a resident on our areas was convinced they were talking on the phone to a police officer or someone who was connected to the police. The victim was asked to transfer money under the guise of some kind of threat of arrest.  The Police will NEVER ask you over the phone or in person to withdraw or send money.
A number of important points to remember - many criminals spoof the number they appear to be calling you from in order to hide their real identity or to mimic the number of a real company or person. These calls can be made from anywhere in the world.
Never give information which has a financial connection - most personal details - unless you are absolutely certain the call is genuine. Did you initiate the call. Have you tried calling the genuine number back from a different phone if possible?
There are numerous scams and each attempt, even if not successful, could provide lots of personal information to the criminals that they then could use on a different occasion or under a different scam.
If you would like any further information do make contact with us and we will help. You can contact me via email , via the 101 phone number for Cheshire Police, you can visit Widnes Police station, check our main website at

some scams include...
Identity Fraud, phone Spoofing, Lottery & Prize draw, Clairvoyant,, Catalogue, Courier, Investment, HMRC, Dating, Distraction Burglary, Rogue Trader, Computer software service and other kinds of scams.

A lot of nuisance calls can be blocked using various devices and one such device is Truecall. They can be contacted Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm on 08000 336330 or via

In summary - unless you are absolutely certain the person you are talking to is genuine do not engage. If they are genuine the caller or visitor should not be put off if you question them or if you decide to deal with things differently.

P.S if you would like to join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme or to find out more use the contact methods above to ask about this. Thanks for your time, Stephen Marnick
